This page from 1995 is only of historic interest and is no longer updated, since search engines such as Google, Bing and DuckDuckGo dominate the market now.

Introduction

Although a wealth of information is available in the World Wide Web, one of the biggest problems is finding an appropriate document. Quite different systems are available for that purpose, and some hints to their reasonable usage shall be given in this text.

There are searchable indexes, search engines, hierarchical indexes, index lists, lists of WWW servers and more. The information offered may have been gathered manually, automatically by some kind of robot traversing the Web or semi-automatically by schemes such as Aliweb. Index terms may have been taken from the title or headers only or from the full text of the documents.

You should be aware that all Web search systems which are currently available have their pros and cons. You may retrieve lots of garbage or nothing at all. If you did not find what you were looking for, reasons may be as follows: (1) perhaps that piece of information is not yet available in the Internet, (2) you did not use the appropriate index, (3) you did not ask the right question, either syntactically or logically. Although most searchable indexes are set up for "keyword" searches, usage and search syntax vary. Even the big search engines cover only about 10 to 20 % of all web pages.

Note that searching anonymous FTP sites presents a different problem which is best tackled by FTP search.
