STN Mentor Laboratory CD - what is it?

The STN Mentor software is produced by STN International in affiliation with FIZ Karlsruhe and CAS (Chemical Abstracts Service), a division of the American Chemical Society.

The STN Mentor Laboratory CD ROM provides new features for training in online searching on STN International:

STN Training Section for DOS and Windows
The Hypertext lessons provide insight regarding how bibliographic STN databases are built and how they can be searched. A brief quiz, the "Self-Test Section" is also included for you. In addition it provides an explanation of the major Messenger commands and operators. The Windows version also includes the Hypertext version of the official "Guide to Commands" published in printed form in August 1994.

STN Messenger Training/Simulation Software
The STN Messenger simulation software enables you to practice online searching, on your PC, in a manner so real, you will think you are online with STN International. Large training databases with some 10.000 documents are searchable using many of the same commands that you would use if you were online. Example searches are provided with each database or you can try your own searches. This is a tool for those just getting started in online searching or experienced searchers that want to teach the basics of online searching not only by using paper based tutorials.

GENERAL LIMITATIONS

The limitations for a DOS or Windows based STN Messenger simulation are mainly caused by the difference in performance and memory capacity between your PC and the powerful mainframes used by STN International.

File Size - Because of the limited capacity of a training CD ROM, the training files only contain 10.000 - 20.000 documents each. A real STN File may contain millions of documents.

Type of searches - The STN Messenger simulation software used in STN Mentor Laboratory CD supports bibliographic search simulation. However, structure and full-text searching are not supported.

Search Fields - The documents included in the STN Messenger simulation are real documents from files on STN International. These documents have been captured online and adapted so as to be retrievable with the simulation software. Depending on the file and its structure, some search fields or display formats may be missing compared to the original file on STN International.

Quitting STN Mentor Laboratory CD ROM for DOS

Pressing the [ESC] key allows you to exit from the lesson at any time after confirming that you really want to exit.

If you are in the STN Messenger simulation, you first have to logoff using the "LOGOFF" command before you press the [ESC] key.

Quitting STN Mentor Laboratory CD ROM for Windows

If you are in the STN Messenger simulation, you simply have to logoff using the "LOGOFF" command. You may also doubleclick the upper left corner of the "online" window.
