Fluorinated, alkenyl, alkynyl, and geminal isocyanides. Isocyanide complexes, flash vacuum pyrolysis, molecules of radioastronomical interest, fluorinated organometallic compounds, cluster compounds, x-ray crystallography.

KURZE ZUSAMMENFASSUNG

Our research is focused on small isocyanides, unstable molecules at metal centers, metal cluster compounds and especially the effects of replacement of hydrogen substituents by fluorine. Fluorinated isocyanides turned out to be very reactive, unstable molecules with interesting ligand properties. Flash vacuum pyrolysis of suitable isocyanide complexes is an excellent method for the synthesis of hitherto unknown types of isocyanides, like alkynyl isocyanides, interesting molecules for molecular spectroscopists and astrophysicists. Isocyanides with several isocyano functions at the same carbon were not characterized until we isolated diisocyanomethane, recently. Although fluorinated organic compounds are of great technological importance, the chemistry of fluorinated organometallic compounds is still very limited. We are studying fluoromethylidyne, difluoroethyne and fluoro alkene complexes. The chemistry, structure and reactivity of bis(alkylidyne) cluster compounds led us to the use of phosphorous containing cluster compounds as bulky ligands. The structure and electronic properties of these molecules are studied in collaboration with various groups using PE, microwave, millimeter wave and high resolution IR spectroscopy, electron diffraction, X-ray crystallography and ab initio calculations.
