ABSTRACTThe primary processes of photosynthesis are currently of greatest interest both in basic research and in the applied field. The development of efficient artificial photosynthetic systems for conversion and storage of solar energy requires a fundamental understanding of the processes that take place in natural photosynthesis. The redox active components of the photosynthetic reaction centers are porphyrins, albeit (reduced) derivatives like (bacterio)chlorophyll, acting as primary donor, and different types of quinone acceptors, e.g., ubiquinone. Synthesis and investigation of the multistep electron transfer routes in porphyrin quinone diads and triads, which mimic the photosynthetic chromophores chain. The light-driven reactions of the model compounds are studied by (time-resolved) optical and, in particular, X band and high-field (95 GHz) EPR spectroscopy. In order to mimic membrane properties of the native systems, measurements are not only performed in isotropic solutions, but in addition in liquid crystals, reversed micelles, and Langmuir-Blodgett films. |
