ABSTRACT

The group's main topic is signal transduction. We investigate the pathway of extra-cellular signals through the plasma membrane to the nucleus. The object of our investigation is the nicotinic acetylcholine receptor, a neurotransmitter receptor which regulates membrane potentials. We investigate its protein structure and mechanism of function by means of microsequencing, mass spectrometry, spectroscopical and other structural methods. The signal transduction from the plasma membrane to the nucleus is investigated through a different model: the object of this part of our research project is protein kinase C, a protein kinase which moves between the cytoplasm, the cell membrane and the nucleus, thereby transporting information. We investigate its mechanism of transport by biochemical, molecular biological and cell biological methods
