KURZE ZUSAMMENFASSUNG

RNA Technologies

The aim of our research is to establish the RNA technologies for the areas of biotechnology and medicine. We are therefore working on the development of the chemical and enzymatic synthesis of ribonucleic acids that have properties of enzymes (ribozymes) and high affinity RNAs (aptamers). The projects also include the development of a protein bioreactor for the in vitro synthesis of new proteins (enzymes, antibodies) containing unnatural amino acids in predetermined positions. The systems developed are heavily dependent upon the employment of in vitro evolution techniques in order to select for RNA and protein molecules with new functional properties that are not found in nature. Other long range goals of our research are to develop computer methods, which will eventually permit the prediction of RNA and protein molecules with specific characteristics, so that the molecules can be synthesized by automatic systems.
